A Sacristan is an officer of the Church who has several specified duties, as well as to assist the local ordinary. Primary is the following of the norms and the preservation of the sanctuary for religious rites described by The Roman Missal. A sacristan is a servant of God. He must pray regularly for help to accomplish his duties as well as to pray for the ordinaries vocation and the community in his charge. As a servant one fills in where ever a need is present. In a small parish, one assists at Mass, trains individuals, makes home calls, hospital calls, answers questions, and the like. It is important to note that one works with the permission of the local ordinary.
